Movie trailer analysis-Guardians of the galaxy

The first shot we get in the trailer is a very long shot of a character who we presume to be the main protagonist standing in a hallway with man y different roads but yet he chooses to go straight through the door ahead of him. We see this character in the second part from both overt he shoulder shot as well as a close up of his face showing him confined in some sort of cave. We then see him from side on reaching out to grab a spherical object a bit tentatively to show maybe the true power of the item in question only to be confronted by three armed guards of some unknown civilisation.

However once confronted he just gives up the ball easily therefore bringing in a bit of comedy into the film even though we expected some sort of epic showdown between him and the three guards to show us that this ball is worth taking. The comedy factor is bought back into it through the fact that he is an unknown villain wo no ones heard of when he sees himself as some international crime lord. The music drops when he says his name is "starlord", the music drop is efficient in telling us that the character is a bit of a joke as he had no intention of fighting to take what he wanted.

Marvel studios is the film studio which made the film, this helps to bring back a lot of past audience members who loved the other films which have been made by Marvel who has made films like spiderman, antman, X-men , captain america and the hulk. Fans of these films would look at this film as a very good alternative to films they have already seen especially when many people consider that the marvel films are all based in the same universe and so they can continue with slight references to other films.

We are then introduced to the main characters in the film through long shots focusing on them while one of the other characters talks over the top adding some background over the top of the trailer, The five people it shows are what we presume to be a team as they have a lot of focus o them therefore giving them prevalence in the shot. However the shot which is focused on the longest is that of Chris Pratt who of course also starred in Jurassic world to show that he is indeed the main protagonist. It says "this summer" to tell the audience just when it is coming out.

The next shot shows the five now prisoners walking in a line to their new establishment before the main character walks out to try and retrieve and item which we can see he holds dear to himself showing us that he has some sort of memory attached to this item, this helps us to realize that despite he outer appearance he still has a soft heart where he holds onto inanimate objects which are special to him.

The music which is so significant to the plot that it is then transmitted to the overall trailer as cover music over the top of the trailer. The shots then get gradually quicker and start to show a bit more action in them including some guns as well as physical fighting as we presume they fight to get out of prison or for the significance of the spherical object they found earlier until it eventually shows a close up of the main five during their penultimate battles with another character presumably an antagonist.

We then have the narrator label them as the "guardians of the galaxy" of course a reference to the titles name, after this the music comes back to reveal all of the characters standing in a line until finally the title comes up displaying it to the audience the name so they don't forget the lasting effect it has as well as a fade in logo of Marvel coming in to remind Marvel fans of the film.

Movie trailer analysis-Sanctum

The opening shot of Sanctum shows a man who we presume to be the main protagonist swimming down in the depths of an underwater cave  where they are surrounded by darkness, everything apart form their light is dark and mysterious, for me the first thing which comes to mind when i see this shot is the dark depths of the Atlantic and the wreck of the Titanic laying virtually untouched by humanity but yet deeply affected by the deep dark depths of the ocean. For other audience members this may bring up any underlying fears of water if they are afraid of drowning, the dark if the dark unsettles them or just claustrophobia from the walls of the caves closing in around them.

The second thing we see in the trailer is a shot telling us the executive producer which is James Cameron, he is a very well known director who has made two of the most successful films of all time in Avatar and Titanic and will continue to produce until he has gone past his age, this professionalism and sight for precision in his work is what really draws fans in especially seeing he spent 10 years making Avatar as he wanted to wait until the right technology was out to get the desired affect he was looking for.

There is lots of shots involved deep down in the caves where the shot just seems to make people down there seem lonely, almost like they are aliens in a normal environment, the quote used "that will take your breath away" is surprising because it brings the concept of your last breath into play where an oxygen tank is concerned or by drowning where water is concerned.

We then get a shot of the company logos involved in the production of this film including Universal studios, relativity media and wayfare, Universal is the one which sticks out the most as it has the most well known films from the three including many of the highest grossing films of all time in north America and the world.

They talk about the last unexplored territory in the world which must be a bit dramatic considering we have only explored 5% of the world's ocean. They say the typical horror movie cliche phrase "what could possibly go wrong", we know as an audience member that this means something will definitely go wrong especially where caves and water are concerned.

They talk about setting records or doing it for history but yet there still seems to be a family air around it as we see a young man and an older man who seem to have some sort of connection probably father and son because we can see that he is told to be easy on him in reference to the younger lad.

The narrator says about the Earth's inner sanctum, this being the cave and then says if you get lost no one knows your down here, this scenario may be essential to the film as this means that they wanted to keep the mission a secret to stop media or governmental interference in their project. We then hear a distant rumble coming fro further in the cave, our first instincts would be water as the start of the trailer shows water and that is proven right seconds later as it shows two people plummeting out a hole which is pouring out water.

It says the movie is inspired by true events which makes it even more of a spectacle as it would be like we're living the real life tale of those involved in this supposed accident caused by a tropical cyclone. They say about the cave flooding which is exactly what the audience expects when it comes to this film, being in a cave you would expect the thing for them to do would be to try and escape before it floods which of course is easier said then done.

We see bonds start to form between the characters as they go out of the comfort zones to do what's best for the team, the dad talks a lot of common sense and seems to be that calming influence on the rest of the group with his rational thinking of heading towards the lake/ocean through the passageway seems to be their only alternative. The next scene has them see "see you on the other side" which is in most movies when the main characters are separated.

We then see it say a release date for February of that year, followed by the caption the "greatest adventure comes from within" in between pictures of people struggling to escape from the depths of their own making, this being the cave which they set out to explore. We see how sacrifices must be made with a fight with fire as well as someone cutting the line to the colleague followed by the term never give up, said twice for better effect to make sure people understand just how tragic this real story was, the trailer is then ended when they say the title of the film again and then a reminder of the fact that the film is coming out soon.

Movie trailer analysis-Pirates of the Caribbean-At worlds end

The trailer starts off with a long shot of an old pirate ship sailing upon the ocean with the sunset behind it, this shot is significant because it shows to us that the sunset means something in the film , the ship the same as it shown first given it prevalence in the overall grand scheme of the movie. As the camera gets closer to the ship we hear a little girls singing voice singing about pirates in a very innocent fashion.

The shot of the Disney logo is significant because Disney have power all over the world to influence people in more ways than one especially when it comes to movies where they top box offices time and time again, it has gotten to the point where no one wants to release a film at the same time as Disney because they will get nowhere near the top of the box office. Disney have become so powerful in the global market that even adults want to watch the films they are producing at the moment especially with the success of films such as Frozen, tangled and Brave. It also shows Jerry Bruckheimer films which is good because he also produced the original films in the series.

We have a close up of a compass proving to the audience how significant it can be in this film, the fact that the compass is spinning round in a circular fashion is strange to the audience as compasses usually tell us exactly what way we have to go, the fact that it is spinning helps us to realize that something is amiss.

We have a series of close ups of characters who were significant to the plot in the first two films from the from main back up role to main antagonist from the first film to a long shot of all the significant crew members from the first films. The next shot of the ice automatically suggest to us that they are in a cold wasteland probably near the north pole or Antarctica. The cold can be emphasized by the fact that Kiera Knightly is in the back covered in a warm woolly coat not moving suggesting she is feeling frozen.

The shot of the ship upside down is significant because it denies the rules of physics where gravity is applied, from what we see the ship is upside down in water possibly meaning that it is sinking however when you consider that ships sink fast when submerged it leaves a major plot hole unexposed.

We have a narration telling us all about "worlds end" of course this is referring to the title of the film, the picture used is made by CGI to show the theory about the end of the world back around the time the film was set. Back then sailors believed that if you were to go out of sight from the nearest land you would fall off the world into an endless abyss, of course this proved to be untrue and eventually the world was hypothesized to be round rather than a flat landscape where the end of the world was the see able borders.

We then get a dramatic zoom in on the main protagonist to show him in a sort of predicament where he is all alone, "the next scene he says "did nobody come to save me just because they missed me" this refers to the story's plot as he has obviously got lost and relied on his crew to come save him. The fact that the monkey is the only one to put his hand up to the question is to show that the film has a bit of comedy about it rather than just action based at kids 12 and above or adults who enjoy a well planned film.

We get a second bit of narration who refers to the end of pirates, the audience can therefore infer from this that there is something driving the pirates out of the water away from their normal ways of plundering and stealing yet to revealed to us. We then hear the main protagonist say that four of his crew tried to kill him and one succeeded followed by a close up of Keira Knightly's face to show us that she is guilty for whatever reason for his death.

They talk about enemies uniting which of course doesn't usually happen unless they have a strategic target which they share in this case it could be all of the pirates or just our protagonist in general as he was supposed to be dead. They talk about pirate lords which of course is a new concept in general and then chooses to zoom in on a few of them to emphasize their point about all corners of the world.

We hear the main antagonist say about extinction but yet none of the pirates seem willing to accept it, the long shot of the ships facing of against eachother with the whirlpool in the middle is significant because whirlpools are part of ancient folklore considering people back then believed the kraken lay at the bottom of it.

We then finally have the shots start to speed up showing all the action it can fit in as well as a bit of comedy where the proposal is concerned to end on a dramatic note with the final fight between main protagonist and one of the main antagonist's, after showing all of the actors names in an order more suitable to their parts in the plot it shows more quick shots ranging in length, distance and height until it gets to the climax where it displays the title at the end.

Movie trailer analysis-Battleship

The universal logo then comes into the shot next to show the audience just how well made the film was, Of course the studios are famous for making big budget productions which make back money many times over especially the case with Jurassic world which ended up being the 3rd highest grossing film of all time not just in North America but in the world. It was also the mastermind behind fast and furious 7, Jaws, King Kong, back to the future and the first two Jurassic park films. This sort of credibility is essential to a films success as the company has built up a fan base over many many years of making quality films.

The first shot of within the trailer is that of the actual setting, the establishing shot used shows us the ocean which the film will be based in, it then pans upwards to show the fleet of battleships which of course is a reference to the film's title. The shot is effective because it gives the audience an idea of how big the battleships truly are compared to normal people. We then get another establishing shot this time of Honolulu where the built up city is reminiscent of many American cities with the high flying apartments, however what's significant about Hawaii is the mountain ranges and beautiful beaches.

We then add both the battleship element of fire-power and strength to the relaxing element of their surroundings with a shot of a lady relaxing on a surfboard. We then get a shot of two of the main characters lying on a beach talking about proposals and other stuff in the stars over their heads and lights all around them, this is typical of young couples looking to pass onto the next stage of their lives maybe a bit too quickly.

We are then introduced to Liam Neeson and his character who looks like they hold lots of power most probably the captain of the ship, shouting at the character we were just introduced to before on the beach showing that he is indeed a higher rank.We see shots of typical armed forces such as shaving hair and more pictures of boats.

We hear the captain utter about how the main protagonist is the quickest rising star in the US navy but yet he wastes it all, this is shown with him being late to what looks like a very important and formal meeting where every other soldier is standing in a line awaiting orders whereas he is trying to find his place in the line.

We get a shot reverse shot between the main protagonist and his girlfriend from ship to shore and back again to show some more chemistry between them, the look on her face gives us the feeling that she is fed up of something, this something the audience presumes to be the main character asking for permission from the captain to marry his daughter.

We hear him say "naval exercises" which gives us the impression that it is all just fun and games however at the same time we see lots of different countries flags including Japan, this may cause some sort of rivalry between the ship crews as they are training together why trying to outshine one another

We get an overlaying message come up over the shot of the moving battleships to inform the people in the audience where they are, what they are doing and how long they have been there for, this helps to make sure that the audience understands what is going on as well a not assuming anything bad will happen.

We see a panning shot from the deck of one of the ships almost like a POV shot from a crew member turning his head to get a sight of what looks like a piece of land sticking up out of the water. This seems to mobilize the crew into action as no one can seem to place what it is or how it got there not even on an electromagnetic scope/

They see they need a team to investigate it and so pick the main protagonist to sort out the situation therefore giving him an opportunity to right all of his wrongs and sort things out therefore becoming the naval officer he was supposed to be.We get an action shot of a moving dinghy but to remind us that this is indeed a horror movie they put a massive gun on it with none other than Rihanna at the wheel, The establishment of a new character is significant because many people would like to see here in an acting role and know this movie offers them this chance.

We see our main character hit land and nothing happens but as he travels further and further you can tell something is up, The long shot through the eyes of the man marking the binoculars is effective because it makes us feel like we are actually watching him do this.

Once the character touches the ship we can see visually the pain he is going through as he is flung back into the water, we hear a clear directive being "get out of the water", this seems rather hard to do as they are far from their ship. The launching of the forcefield is something very unexpected as it is very abnormal to do, the fact that this enemy craft has trapped some battleships inside of it may seem naive but if it is that confident in taking them out then we think it must be very powerful. The sound is very effective as this humming like sound which doesn't seem man made, the very long shot of the forcefield is effective because you can clearly see an island in the middle, we know from earlier in the trailer that the ships are on training exercises and so aren't there to protect the island.

We then see a massive movement of water when the alien ship comes out of the water, the water shielding the sight mostly form our vision, when it splashes down we get an idea of how large it is as it dwarfs the dinghy by quite a considerable amount. The action shot of the underneath of the ship is only there to showcase how superior their tech is compared to ours. The close up of the captains face shows to us that he is a main character, this is followed by a close up of the main protagonist leading us to believe that these people have chemistry through whatever reason. We are then treated to a birds eye view of a three way stand off eith the dinghy in the middle and a three on three battle the other side, the birds eye view makes us think of the game battleship because of the almost board game like setting.

We then get lots of shots gradually getting quicker and quicker showing many different types of weapons with people running away and everyone looking like they are in the mood for a battle, the last shot we get is off the main battleship as it prepares for what looks like a final battle where they fire all cannons in an eastwards direction hoping to destroy the target, this is followed by the name of the film so people don't forget the name or year it is coming out.

Movie trailer analysis-The Simpsons movie

The first shot is of the 20th century fox logo, a well known distributing company who as many people know created many films as well as TV programs. The trailer starts with a bit of narration giving hints about the release date of the film saying "this summer", this helps the audience to set a season to remember the exact date of release. We then get a few terms which contradict the other such as honour and dishonour, this is used to set the tone of the film as a type of confusing comedy.

We then get a shot of the main character set in a drawing phase to establish the character in very early development, the fact that he is coloured in yellow is significant because people can always relate the colour yellow in animation to the Simpsons, the actual drawing is one which everyone seeing the film will know straight away especially in an American household. We then get a shot of the newly animated main protagonist as he travels across some sort of Arctic tundra, The fact that he says his command twice is there to add emphasis on the seriousness of the commands, this makes him seem like he is on a mission, one which we don't know yet. We then get the date of the release once again, the third time they have hinted at it on the first 35 seconds of filming.

It says "a secret will be revealed" but yet leaves us hanging like that, this is used to reel the audience in as a rhetorical question keeps people looking for answers. It establishes the main characters well as it gives us a shot of unlikely pairings such as Bart  and Ned Flanders and Homer and manual labour. We have a very dramatic music set the tone in the background as they are told about a decision which could make or break their town.

We see a developing storyline happen later on in the trailer with clues being put together constantly to put the blame on Homer, this something however alludes the audience and therefore keeps them intrigued to find out. the editing is quite slow so the audience doesn't get to lost on the plot in the film.

The next 20 seconds of shots is edited really well to establish all of the characters which will be in this film, it has different shots on each character including close ups, medium, long, very long, high angle, low angle and many more. It says the movie event "18 years in the making" this makes the audience think if the film has taken 18 years to make or if the series have been on for 18 years.

Another bit of controversy is when Bart goes to Flanders over the Simpsons, the audience would be shocked to learn this revelation and would want to know what has finally driven him over the edge to abandon hos father all together..

We see lots of dramatic shots of containing action with a thumping type of rythem to emphasize the seriousness of the situation however we then get back to the comedic fashion of the film when we see Homer in the bedroom with Spiderpig. We then get a few more different shots of action followed by one of the most controversial thing about the Simpsons which is Homer strangling his son completely violating almost every law on child protection as he does it.

At the end we get another shot containing the title of the film so people will have a lasting image of the sort of film it will be, the doughnut with a bite out of it is a reference to Homer and his unfathomable appetite until it finally says in cinemas worldwide showing the popularity of the series in question and the release date once agian so they don't forget.

Movie trailer analysis-Prometheus

At the start of the trailer we get a shot lasting just 3 seconds of the first character, rather skeletal in being he is solely there for the purpose of establishing what the film is about, even from the short length of the shot we can tell that this creature is a similar stature to a human but really looks very different. This shot was designed to stick in the minds of the audience just the slightest so it is a talking point for the audience for a few brief seconds.

The next shot we get is an establishing shot of the planet which the film is set on, this alien landscape is very effective in getting across the vastness of the realm which these humans find themselves in, the actual setting does slightly look like a more extreme version of either the Andes or mount Everest with all of the ominous fog surrounding it. After this we get a stationary shot of a moving spacecraft as it flies its way into the atmosphere of the selected planet, this opens up the scene to establish space as its frontier, through the use of a cockpit shot possibly in a POV format it manages to purvey the never ending lengths of space and even though it is beautiful with hundreds upon thousands of stars it is also cold, dark and dangerous. These sort of stereotypes are built upon within the film to make space look like both our last hope for salvation as well as our first fear of danger "the unknown"

We are then introduced to our characters firstly through a birds eye view of a female character who the audience presumes is the main character. it then further establishes the amount of humans on board by panning slightly to the right to get as many capsules into the shot as it can. This is all capitalized on when it shows the captain of the ship guiding it and its passengers/crewman through the planet and down onto the surface with a very nice low angle shot instigated by CGI but still completed to a very good standard. The next shot of 20th century fox is there to give not only credit to the company which helped make the film possible but also help people in the audience relate to the other type of content from the set distributor.

The next scene starts of a bit strange as the main character talks about some ancient civilisation but uses such highly technological equipment to describe it, this sort of thing is perhaps used to make the humans look better and more efficient than we actually are. This is also contradicted by the fact that they find cave drawings pointing them to the right direction to some unknown race who may not even be alive. The scene then continues with a long shot of a convoy of armoured vehicles whom we presume belong to the US army or some intergalactic army of Earth. This sort of military presence gives of the impression that this mission is classified and no one is supposed to know especially seeing they are just running off of cave paintings.

The panning up shot of the big stone structure is quite daunting as it is used to come across as some imposing structure perhaps signifying some sort of warning to stay away. The ancient stone language depicted is there to prove to us that this intelligent race has their own literacy as well as architectural design. We then get two distinct close ups in a row with one being of who we presume to be a main character and the other of some sort of alien frozen for some reason. We are then treated to a bit of dialect from the main female protagonist who uses the word "Prometheus" which of course is a direct link to the movies title, however that is not what sticks out the most, this would be the fact that she is not even wearing a helmet in alien territory this makes us thin multiple questions all of which keep the audience questioning themselves meaning they stay interested.

The next shot is to establish a setting which will be further on in the film, this cave is abnormal because they are cut into perfect spherical shapes and yet we don't know by who or what, here we get a bit of ambience to build into the more tense music coming a bit later in the trailer.

We then have another character commentating over the movements of the other characters and during his dialogue he says the term "another lifeforms" meaning there is something else sown with them. This makes the audience think if this film will truly follow in its so called sequels footsteps. There is then a short interchange of shots all about life from the loosest of substances like some sort of excrement or an actual moving life form. We then get a shot of an alien ship, the next twenty seconds of shots are used to show the ship moving and leaving for its final destination, this along with the music that gets tenser as it goes through helps us to realize just how careful our planet has to be when exploring for other civilisations.

The music gets tenser and tenser and tenser showing more and more people in panic which we presume is through different stages of the film as things are happening until we get a final shot of whom we presume to be the last survivor getting into an escape pod and then finally showing the people taking fate in their own hands with firearms. The last term "big things have small beginnings" is referring to the start of the film where a simple cave drawing is what led them out here to eventually discover alien life even though it is hostile. The trailer ends with the title of the film shown once again, followed by the actors, distributing companies and then finally the date of the release which was June 8th.

Movie trailer analysis-Star wars episode 7

As with all the other films I've analyzed the star wars trailers starts off with all the correct authentication to prove that the movie is rated correctly, through filmratings.com and the MPAA.com. The first part of the trailer open up with a sort of ominous tension in the background as the Lucasfilm logo comes up, people who are a fan of the original film would straight away see the significance of the distributor as it the same company as the original meaning they will be able to gain a target audience gathered through decades of fans of the movies.

The establishing shot we first get is of the desert with the shot panning to the right to show the vast expansiveness of this almost uninhabitable domain. We get treated to a shot of a man on a speeder accelerating past the imperial destroyer which has crashed and been swallowed by the land around it. This is significant because in the 4th, 5th and 6th films the imperial star destroyer was seen as a massive sign of the empire's strength, the fact that it has crashed may be referring to the state of the empire after the last film with rebel factions uprising everywhere.
In this scene we also have one of the most iconic theme tunes ever made which almost everyone who access to a TV, computer or any other form of entertainment system. The song really does stick with the audience as it truly brings people back to their childhood when they first watched the series of films.

The first bit or narration we hear is from a character which fans of the original can pick up straight away, this character being Luke Skywalker, the fact that he says "the force is strong in my family" makes us think back to the original plots and gets the audience to think how this film can build on from the last ones.

We are then treated to a close up on one of the most significant characters from the original trio of films, this is accompanied by the quite distant breaths and one of the most recognizable noises in movie history. He then carries on speaking giving the audience clues as to who his real identity is, he references both his father whilst showing Darth Vader's mask and then shows a shoulder down shot of his sister but with the attention solely on the lightsaber giving it prevalence over the lady in the shot.

We then get a bit of advertising so people know when its coming out by saying "this Christmas", this is good because it means the audience know when the film is coming out.

We are then treated to a bit of computer generated imagery (CGI) when the jetfighters fly by the camera, after this it zooms in on the main character to give us a close up of his facial features, this sort of prevalence makes us think that this character is essential to the plot of the film and maybe could be from the original. We then get an action shot of a lightsaber wielding character who slices it through the camera, this makes us think that the character is a bad guy as he seems to be swinging at another character possibly to kill. Then we have a close up of the same evil character pushing his hand into the camera as the screen gets darker to add emphasis on the scene. We then get a mixture of different shots to show the empire at its so called best, the reason for this is to make it look like an unstoppable force. We then get a close up of another main character to establish the character into the trailer.

After this we are treated to a CGI spaceship chase with the millennium falcon which is also a very well known prop from the original. People in the audience can relate tho this because they know the significance one star-fighter can have in the world. Audience members are then treated to a shot right at the end of Harrison Ford (Han Solo from the original) being shown, this must be a big selling point as the character is recognizable along with his friend Chewbacca they make a famous film duo. Until finally we get the title of the film come up to make sure the audience knows the name of then the film and then the last shot we get says that the film is coming out in December so fans can look forward to it.

Movie trailer analysis-The thing

The opening to the trailer is an establishing shot of a harsh snowy environment with the sky dark with very little natural light out. This makes us think that they are either very far up north or south because of the unforgiving nature of the environment. It then switches to a long shot of a very long hallway, the shot is effective because it sets the scene for something to happen there sometime later in the film. The music comes quite quickly into contention with a loud thump thump action almost like the ryhtmatic fashion of a heartbeat in a constant fashion at the same speed.

The first shot of a human we get is of who we presume to be the main character, he says "if none of us make it back", this automatically makes us presume that there is something out there which is dangerous and out to get everyone. It then gives us another establishing shot just a lot closer up of the same cabin in the darkness with only a few ominous blue lights to light up the snow. We then get a two shot of two people walking with a flare, the flare is there to symbolize a light in the darkness, it is also a signal for danger as when people are in dangerous situations they shoot flares.

We then get a shot of the Universal logo to tell us this film is made professionally, even though this was before they were known for making extremely good films, at this time they were still known as an average company with lots of ambitions and the cash to go with it. We then get more of an action shot with the helicopter flying over the tundra towards the compound with a person chilling on the side. This could mean that another significant character is being introduced as the helicopter is usually reserved for wealthier people who can afford private or for businessman who get taken to the place they are needed.

We then get a shot reverse shot between the established protagonist and a man with a gun. This shows to us that the film will be getting intense and fire arms will be needed at some point during the film. They then start talking about pandemics and diseases which the audience presumes has struck down one of the team on the mission. However the audience are still confused as to why they are in the frozen wasteland in the first place.

We then get a shot of a hole in the ice where we have two people looking down, the shape of the hole leads us to the conclusion that the hole is not man-made, they contradict the coldness of the surrounding area by having the main character say that they need to burn it. The term "it" is irrelevant at the moment as we are not sure what "it" is.

They talk about how thousands of years ago it crashed and then it shows a long shot of some alien looking hole with a big ship in in the middle of it covered in ice. The music has slightly changed but keeps it heartbeat fashioned rythem constant throughout the trailer. We then start to hear about something crawling out the ice leading us to believe that it is some sort of alien which has escaped the confounds of ice.

It then gives us more of an insight into the plot after using a POV shot to suggest that the burnt remains of an unknown creature are somehow still alive. The audience realize straight away that something is up and this alien will have a great impact on the plot. For the second time in the film we are treated to a close up of a firearm meaning that they will be significant later in the movie.

We then go through a dramatic sequence of different shots showing the different stages of the infection with people clearly being shook up by whatever is happening and the group gradually getting smaller. In this time we get lots of medium and close ups on the characters to make us think in our minds who the actual monster may be by looking for any specific differences in personality or looks.

We start to see the group get picked off one by one and blood is initiated into the movie, this along with the confusion over whether or not you can believe the character on screen or whether they should follow their instincts and not believe anyone. Then there is a lot of shots showing the creature coming for everyone until it shows our main protagonist by himself leading us to believe he either evacuated or he is the last survivor.

Lastly we get credits come up giving due respect to the creators (John Carpenter) and then shows a big title to get the audience attention so they don't forget the name of the film.

Movie trailer analysis-Godzilla

The first thing we see when the trailer establishes is the logo of Warner bro's studio's who the audience can straight away pick out as a very impressive distributing company. For the massive film fans out there they can also associate the logo with many movies and TV shows made before and therefore hope that the new film will live up to the expectation of the films before it. The other film logo it shows us is that of Legendary films which is not as well known as Warner bro's but still qualify's as a fast upcoming brand of film studio.

The narrator says "I want to speak to someone in charge", the quote is effective because to ask for such a thing infers to us that something has gone wrong, or he has seen something he was not supposed to and therefore wants to get to the bottom of what is going on. The music then drops into the sound of a fog horn really loud to catch the attention of the audience, the first shot shown is of a jam packed highway where everyone seems to be trying to escape form something, people who are fans of the original film would presume that this something is Godzilla or some other type of monster. The shot then pans up to show a catastrophic sight of a plane crash right in the middle of all the cars, this seems to symbolize the state of panic which everyone seems to be in.

The next part of the narrators dialogue says about a "natural disaster" rather than a monster, he seems to know that this is indeed a cover up and that the government are just labelling stuff what
they please to not cause mass panic. The music then drops again into an over the shoulder shot of a city under siege leading us to believe that there is some sort of conflict between two powers of the world. Once again it seems to emphasize on panic, this time by showing children running, this conforms to stereotypes because naturally kids are seem as innocent, harmless and should be put at the forefront of any sort of survival situation, The teacher is also taking on a stereotypical role by caring for everyone else's safety before her own.

The narrator once again quotes about the lack of natural disaster before it cuts to a shot of who we presume to be a main character running against the tide of traffic, this is symbolic because it shows the power he has in this situation as he is running towards the danger, this is usually the case with superhero's who also don't run away from danger rather face it head on.The fact that everyone else is in a hazmat suit or engineering outfit leads us to believe that they are at some massive underground plant where they deal with highly volatile and dangerous substances such as uranium.

The next shot of the military convoy being escorted by the helicopters is also very helpful when establishing the film as it shows us
whatever problem they are facing it will need the full strength of their army to do it, of course however the strong military presence will lead to panic in the place they are going as people know that the army in their town is not a good sign.

The panning up shot then establishes the destroyed city we saw moments earlier  with massive chunks taken out of the developed buildings, this sort of power to destroy what took us hundreds of thousands of years to innovate is a bit daunting as it shows that against such force we truly are tiny. The close up of the statue of liberty after that shot gets the audience thinking because it is such a well known landmark which is supposed to be a symbol of the freedom, equality and liberty shown in America destroyed by an unseen entity. The narrator then establishes himself in the movie by stating that it will "send us back to the stone age" by this he is saying that this creature has the power to destroy everything we have created whilst hardly lifting a finger or moving a muscle, such power can only be exhibited by something of massive proportions.

We then get shown our first shot of the creature in question, shown from a birds eye view looking down over a bridge we get to see Godzilla swim straight under it and the first thing which shocks the audience is the sheer size of the beast as it easily longer than the bridge, we then get to see the power of the creature for the first time when it lifts up the whole ocean moving two destroyer ships out of the way like they were some sort of toy. This type of thing would be daunting even to an audience member because it makes them think "what would i do in that situation?".

It then shows an over the shoulder shot from the back seat of the car where it shows an ongoing rush of water (tsunami) caused by the creature in question, once again the audience sees the unstoppable force of mother nature this time cause by the monster.

The next bit of the trailer shows a group of what seem to be highly trained soldiers searching for answers to the questions asked, a significant part of it is when it shows a close up of a soldiers hand moving aside some sort of chemical to expose the radioactive material sign, this spells the disaster and the audience would first think of a nuke as they are very commonly associated with nuclear weapons.

This is then built upon with the unveil of nuclear weapons and the description of the nuclear tests by the Marshall islands in 1954, It then shows us Godzilla's back once again in the water which seems to be its native habitat and then then the whole screen goes white to indicate the arrival of something powerful, that being a nuclear weapon used to try and destroy Godzilla, the mushroom cloud then shown is an image which everyone will know and should be afraid of (a nuclear bomb). After this it says "this summer" to display to the audience when the film will actually be out so they know how long they have to wait.

Another battlefield is showing with Godzilla once again choosing to stay hidden, the two person shot is who we presume to be the main protagonists of the film, it then shows a close up of Ken Watanabe a character who comes across as very sophisticated and intelligent. We then get two quick shots in quick succession of something flying and then hitting the water after one frame to avoid exposing it completely to the audience.

We then have a very long shot of a city surrounded by dark clouds to show that this is where stuff will go down, this is after the over the shoulder shot of the parachuter's jumping out of the plane, in the second shot you can truly see lines of red smoke to show where the parachuter's are in comparison to the actual shot. After this it shows a shot reverse shot between two characters who we presume to have some chemistry especially seeing they have so much emotion on their faces.

We then get a POV shot of a soldier looking on as planes all around him are falling out of the sky, this makes the audience think "why", "is there an interference" "have they been shot" etc. The last shots of the trailer show four flares shot up into the air either symbolizing a symbol of help to onlookers or it could be a warning shot of impending danger. The shot we then get is of Godzilla once again not showing the full features of his face rather his humongous size. We then get a rapid amount of shots shown in a row of action, emotion, tragedy, hope, helpfulness, danger and then to cap it all off we finally see Godzilla face with the doors shutting to keep our imaginations active. The title of the film is then put in front of us with the sound of Godzilla in the background, the title has Japanese in it which leads us to believe that Japan has a major role in the film. We then get the date as well as all the proper authentication to tell us the movie is 100% legit.

Movie trailer analysis-Mission impossible

Trailer starts like any other with the MPAA (motion picture association of America's) rating of approval to show that the film is indeed legitimate to be shown. It shows both Paramount pictures and skydance studios before the trailer even begins to make sure the credit is duly shown to the respective organisations who put effort into making the film what it is. They are at the start of the film for the sole purpose of making the audience think, for example paramount is a very well known with films such as Jackass, anchorman and TV shows such as spongebob and so their audience is quite worldwide. As well as the other two Bad robot is also apart of the distributing team and therefore they make it an even better spectacle.

The first shot we get is an establishing shot of the protagonist's base in an American city. The first bit of narration used is there to tell us this is a continuation of the first as it says the "IMF (impossible mission force), this directly relates to the last film through a few words, The first shot we get of a character is of Jeremy Renner meaning he has an important part to play in the overall plot of the film, the fact he is shown first leads us to believe that he is the main instigator of any mission which may be given to them. The next few shots are of the other characters who are significant to the plot, especially with Tom Cruise as he looks towards the camera to add some dramatic tension to he's motorbike race.

The film establishes itself as an action film when during the bike chase it shows a motorcycle crash and burst into flames. This gives the audience the impression that the film will be all about action, crashes, chases and a direct motive for striving to battle. After this the bike chase it also shows a gun fight to make sure the audience know what they are getting into.

The quick pace of shot changing really puts pace into the trailer and makes us feel like the film is actually a thriller and will have constant action throughout. The slamming of the gavel during the over the shoulder shot of the judge, The fact that he hits it so hard is almost like an initiation for the music to drop. The sound then continues through the next scene to coincide with the shot from the anonymous man as well as Tom Cruise banging on the glass.

It says "last time we saw him he was tracking the syndicate", the emphasis on the word "syndicate" is used to tell members of the audience that the name "syndicate" is indicative to the plot as well as possibly being a constant presence throughout the whole film.

It then establishes our first female character through a well choreographed fight scene that sees her join forces with Ethan Hawk,  The shot reverse shot between Ethan and the woman is important as it shows they have a bit of chemistry. The next part of the trailer is a bit of advertising saying "this summer" meaning they want people to be aware from June onward's that the film is due a release.

The next shot shows Simon Pegg walking down a train platform when he is handed a package, the camera then zooms in on the glasses to look at the microchip in them, this helps the audience to realize the true purpose over being handed the glasses in the first place.

Once again Tom Cruise uses the term "syndicate" and this time says their real, this could mean that people don't believe him or his evidence into an investigation concerning this so called "syndicate". He then quotes the name of the movie "rogue nation" to truly emphasize the title so people don't forget what film they should be looking out for this summer. It then show a series of images showing this so called crime syndicate and then zooms in slightly on who we presume to be the leader. The rhetorical question used "are you ready" is useful because it deems it to be like a secret service movie, especially seeing its a question you know the answer will be yes to thus starting the movie.

It then shows another close up of all the main protagonists to further establish them into the unfolding story. Including the woman from before who is now firmly on the protagonist side, it then goes back into some more action type chase scene with weapons to further show that it is indeed a horror film.

We see another fight scene to further show that the film will be packed with action followed with different types of technology being used to display and innovate different ways to kill select targets, it then show both Tom Cruise and the woman flying down a rope almost like an escape from a high pressure situation.

It also shows more quick paced shots of the actual mission which includes close up, medium, long, panning and many more, this includes a high free fall jump as well as a slow motion low angle shot of a car going down a flight of stairs in reverse.

The music then starts to pick up a bit into the normal mission impossible theme tune along with the shot which makes the movie the most famous with the plane scene. This is because Tom Cruise chooses to do his own stunts, this creates a lot of publicity over the film as people think this is more of a job for a professional.

It then says Tom Cruises name in bold red letters on a black screen to show that it is indeed a film he has produced and starred in. The last thing it shows in an exact date when it comes out (July 31st) as well as a few more credits to the different companies such as Fandango and sky dance again.

Movie poster analysis-Jaws

The poster for jaws is very effective at gaining the audiences attention through it's use of graphic pictures, the picture of the great white shark grabs the audiences attention because it is something which most people were afraid of even before this film was released, the idea of a shark coming up from the underneath and taking off with one of your limbs is very terrifying. The teeth in general are the main focus of the poster as they are sharp enough to rip through flesh, their use in the poster is to give us the idea that this shark is harmful and will do anything to hurt anyone. The woman in the picture seen trying to swim away is shown to be innocent but yet almost naive for the way she seems almost blissfully unaware how quick and precise this creature is. The name of the movie poster is Jaws and just like the colour blood is red, this is symbolic because it infers to us that this creature is bloodthirsty.

The three main actors are positioned up the top of the poster for all to see so they know who the significant actors in the film are, the co-stars in the film are put down the bottom so they don't drag too much attention away from the actual picture or stars of the movies and even though some of them may be significant characters they are left down the bottom maybe because their part isn't as big as the other three or not as significant in the ongoing plot.

Movie poster analysis-2012

The 2012 is a very well designed poster which straight away catches the audiences attention straight-away through its disaster themed graphic imagery. The massive crater in the earth makes us think of earthquakes which is an unstoppable force of mother nature, one of the size of the one in the poster would be catastrophic.
The name catches our attention almost immediately as it is a reference to the Mayan calendar prediction, almost everyone who had access to a computer at the time knew all about the date 21/12/12 the supposed doomsday apocalypse after the Mayan calendar ran out.
The release date is bold and is in the middle of the poster making it the center of attention, this means that the audience straight away know the one detail they need to know if they are interested in the internet campaign.
The cars in the poster show the distress in people as all the cars are driving away from the danger. The human will to survive is essential to the plot as the world around them crumbles they need to gather whatever courage they possess to get to a safer place.
The caption "we were warned" is a prominent part of the poster as it foretells what could have been if we were prepared for the ongoing extinction, the size of the words means they don't necessarily catch the attention of the audience straight away but when people do see it, they have a question planted in their heads most likely "warned about what?". This question can gain an audience for the movie because people would like to see how warnings and doomsday coincide side by side.

Movie poster analysis-Cabin in the woods

The picture used in the poster is very inventive as it shows a house in three parts rotating to show the backwards nature of the film. The fact that the house is old means it can be used to emphasize the old fashioned way of running things, for example in the film they have a very primitive mean of keeping extraterrestrials/Gods from destroying their planet, the sacrifice technique they use shows how little humans have progressed in our search for power.

The title makes use of both large and small lettering in a convenient way. The words which stick out the most is "Cabin" which would refer to the main building where the story takes place, "woods" is next to refer to the setting around the cabin, the emptiness of the forest is there to show how little power humans actually have over their current situation.

The faded woods in the background are fazed out slightly which leads us to believe that they are mysterious. The white colouring surrounding the house can be a reference to the higher being (God) as the colour white is seen as the colour of good.

In this specific poster all the important information is highlighted in bigger bolder writing meaning the attention of the audience will be firmly on the details on which the box office profit relies.
The fact that this film is a horror film means it will appeal to an older audience probably from 15 up, the film is perfect for young teens who want a good scare with a bit of comedic relief, therefore meaning it can be good for both sexes

Movie poster analysis-Knowing

This poster is very effective in gaining an audiences attention through its use of images which people can relate to, the Earth used in this poster is shown with North America facing forwards, this could symbolize the target audience who may have been in the America's. The burning of the planet is there to show us the inevitable conclusion in life that things come to and end whether it be life's, empires or TV shows things eventually stop. The fire is there to show how the planet will go in a massive inferno, the fact that the land is the main thing burning helps us realize that it must be from some outer space heat such as the sun which has caused it to start burning.
The title is also very useful to help us gain a better understanding of what the movie entails; the picture which shows the sun being blocked by the moon or vice versa (lunar or solar eclipse). These events happen very rarely and for some ancient civilizations spelled the end of the world as we know it. The overlapping of the sun and the moon could be referring to the different types of events crossing in over in the movie to have a distinct finish where everything is added together
The use of Nicholas Cages name at the top in big bold writing will help the movie gain an audience as people who are aware of the name and like his acting already have their attention caught. People who haven't seen the movie trailer would realize that this movie is about disaster and putting together the clues in the past. Even the title of the movie "Knowing" is a bit ironic as the whole film is about trying to figure out what the markings which were written so long ago are, this means the whole concept of knowing is irrelevant as they don't actually know anything.

Movie poster analysis-Avatar

The avatar poster is a very symbolic poster which captures the full essence of the emotion portrayed in the actual film. The character shown can be seen to have a very deep connection to the elements around it. The depth shown in the iris can show us how vast the world is, the green, yellow colour may show the future connection to the ground and trees on their planet. The poster catches the audiences attention very well because of the primary colours used, the brightness of the skin colour makes us look for further details of compatibility between the audience and character. The darkness present in the background is there to give the audience a sense of unawareness and a feel of what's to come which could be considered a dark movie plot. The fact that it says "from the director of Titanic" catches the audience eye very quickly as people who are a fan of James Cameron are already caught in the dream that this film could live up to the expectations of James Cameron's last hit film.

The fact that it shows the main protagonist helps us to relate to the character at hand even though he is similar but different from humans. The facial features are very relevant because they show a very content character whose focus may refer to the task at hand.

Horror target audience

The average age for someone watching a movie is usually the younger generation usually between 15-25, this is because people want to experience different emotions and feelings, they are more likely to enjoy the heart pounding horror and sometimes watch things before thinking about possibilities leading to a frightening experience. The horror can excite the young audience more easily and this is good because young people are less likely to be put off by violent imagery which could have a negative effect on the older audience.

The male audience are more likely to like horror films because they can be viewed more as a thrill seekers, it could also be because of the fact that there can be a lot of violence in horror movies which a female audience might not like as much

The class range is aimed at all classes because the prices are relatively cheap but the entertainment good, however it is usually the middle class and working class who come to see the film, this may be because of the satisfaction middle class people seek when watching a film.

Usually people go to see horror movies with a group of friends because it is more of an entertaining experience for everyone in the party to watch every person in the groups different reactions. It is also popular among young couples who are having their first date because it can provide a quiet yet close first date experience. It also tends to be popular with couples who have been going out a long time as they are happy in each-others company and therefore are probably used to how the other one will react.

Romance target audience

In general romance films are usually directed to be good viewing for woman however if the movie does it really well it can also be good for men too. Usually woman aged anywhere from 13-35 will enjoy the heartbreaking agony of some romance films, this may be because they can relate to the main character more because usually in a romance film it is a woman protagonist and therefore woman will be able to relate more and be able to put themselves into the shoes of the main character and can imagine what it would be like to be them in that situation.

Teenagers seem to be a big contributor to the market on romance films and as such the directors usually will make the actor/actress young so the younger audience can relate more to what young love truly is and what it is about.

The romance genre in general is very versatile with the amount of different choices you can have, for example you can sit through romantic comedies for a more light hearted love affair, a romantic drama where every part of the film is overly emotional and dramatic to create more of a loving atmosphere between any young couple in the audience, a chick flick is a type of romance film aimed mainly at woman who can relate to the main characters, it always has some sort of relate-able relationship in it, romantic action comedies is just a type of romance film which bends different genres in into it to make more of an appealing movie to a wider audience and the same goes for the last one a romantic thriller which just tries to make it more interesting for a male audience who wouldn't necessarily like the film otherwise. This wide range of diversity makes the romance genre easilly adaptable to anyone's specific needs in a movie whether that be a light hearted affair, an action sequence or just full on romance it has something which can make everyone happy.

What might i see in a 12 or 12A rated film?

Difference between 12 and 12A

12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing this film, 12 means that any children 12 and over can view the movie. If a cinema allows children under 12 to view a 12A film they may lose their licence

.

Will there be uses of strong language in a 12A or 12 work?

strong language such as the of strong swear words can be used but under extremely thin guidelines, this means it can only be used in a manner which is not provocative or offensive in any matter, for example they can use it in a supposed life or death situation or in a way which will make a joke more funny etc. Any strong language not used in this manner may result in the film receiving a 15 rating rather than a 12 which means the director would lose possible viewers and therefore profit on the film.

Do 12A films contain sexual behavior?

sex can be mentioned but not portrayed thoroughly, verbally jokes can be made and innuendo's implied as long as it at a young teenagers level of comedy and isn't really inappropriate

Weapons can be shown such as guns and bombs but weapons more capable for a young teenager to get a hold of e.g. knife are not allowed to be glamorized as they don't want to be seen promoting violence in young people.

What might i see in a PG film

PG means parental guidance so the films in general are suitable for general viewing in a cinema or at home but for younger children around 8 years old or younger they should view it with an adult

What bad language is present in a PG film?

there can be mild bad language such as "shit or son of a bitch" but anything past that will always be tough to pass as a PG film, if the language is used aggressively or there is a lot of bad language then the rating of the overall film could go up.

Violence in a PG?

there is not allowed to be violence which is too graphic, you are not allowed to dwell on any injury shown and the violence has to be mild. Themes such as bullying and or messing around with something dangerous must not be shown in a good light as the film board does not allow anything which could influence a young child's behavior. If it is found to have a negative impact on how children act then the film board might ask for a section to be removed or they might send back a higher rating then what the director wanted to pass the movie of as.

What might i see in a U?

U stands for universal and it means that pretty much any audience member can view and understand the topics raised. Children under 4 could react differently but it is impossible to know how they would react as different children react in different ways.

Bad language?

in a U film you are only allowed to use very mild bad language and very infrequently at that, for example the use of the terms "damn or hell" can only be used very rarely so that kids aren't influenced to bad mouth.

Violence?

violence will be very mild in a U with only brief fight scenes and generally a feeling of happy ever after, any moments of emotional stress or worry will be quickly resolved to keep up a light atmosphere, there may be brief scary moments but the scenes also have to balance it out with reassuring elements that everything will be fine in a minute.
