Movie trailer analysis-Prometheus

At the start of the trailer we get a shot lasting just 3 seconds of the first character, rather skeletal in being he is solely there for the purpose of establishing what the film is about, even from the short length of the shot we can tell that this creature is a similar stature to a human but really looks very different. This shot was designed to stick in the minds of the audience just the slightest so it is a talking point for the audience for a few brief seconds.

The next shot we get is an establishing shot of the planet which the film is set on, this alien landscape is very effective in getting across the vastness of the realm which these humans find themselves in, the actual setting does slightly look like a more extreme version of either the Andes or mount Everest with all of the ominous fog surrounding it. After this we get a stationary shot of a moving spacecraft as it flies its way into the atmosphere of the selected planet, this opens up the scene to establish space as its frontier, through the use of a cockpit shot possibly in a POV format it manages to purvey the never ending lengths of space and even though it is beautiful with hundreds upon thousands of stars it is also cold, dark and dangerous. These sort of stereotypes are built upon within the film to make space look like both our last hope for salvation as well as our first fear of danger "the unknown"

We are then introduced to our characters firstly through a birds eye view of a female character who the audience presumes is the main character. it then further establishes the amount of humans on board by panning slightly to the right to get as many capsules into the shot as it can. This is all capitalized on when it shows the captain of the ship guiding it and its passengers/crewman through the planet and down onto the surface with a very nice low angle shot instigated by CGI but still completed to a very good standard. The next shot of 20th century fox is there to give not only credit to the company which helped make the film possible but also help people in the audience relate to the other type of content from the set distributor.

The next scene starts of a bit strange as the main character talks about some ancient civilisation but uses such highly technological equipment to describe it, this sort of thing is perhaps used to make the humans look better and more efficient than we actually are. This is also contradicted by the fact that they find cave drawings pointing them to the right direction to some unknown race who may not even be alive. The scene then continues with a long shot of a convoy of armoured vehicles whom we presume belong to the US army or some intergalactic army of Earth. This sort of military presence gives of the impression that this mission is classified and no one is supposed to know especially seeing they are just running off of cave paintings.

The panning up shot of the big stone structure is quite daunting as it is used to come across as some imposing structure perhaps signifying some sort of warning to stay away. The ancient stone language depicted is there to prove to us that this intelligent race has their own literacy as well as architectural design. We then get two distinct close ups in a row with one being of who we presume to be a main character and the other of some sort of alien frozen for some reason. We are then treated to a bit of dialect from the main female protagonist who uses the word "Prometheus" which of course is a direct link to the movies title, however that is not what sticks out the most, this would be the fact that she is not even wearing a helmet in alien territory this makes us thin multiple questions all of which keep the audience questioning themselves meaning they stay interested.

The next shot is to establish a setting which will be further on in the film, this cave is abnormal because they are cut into perfect spherical shapes and yet we don't know by who or what, here we get a bit of ambience to build into the more tense music coming a bit later in the trailer.

We then have another character commentating over the movements of the other characters and during his dialogue he says the term "another lifeforms" meaning there is something else sown with them. This makes the audience think if this film will truly follow in its so called sequels footsteps. There is then a short interchange of shots all about life from the loosest of substances like some sort of excrement or an actual moving life form. We then get a shot of an alien ship, the next twenty seconds of shots are used to show the ship moving and leaving for its final destination, this along with the music that gets tenser as it goes through helps us to realize just how careful our planet has to be when exploring for other civilisations.

The music gets tenser and tenser and tenser showing more and more people in panic which we presume is through different stages of the film as things are happening until we get a final shot of whom we presume to be the last survivor getting into an escape pod and then finally showing the people taking fate in their own hands with firearms. The last term "big things have small beginnings" is referring to the start of the film where a simple cave drawing is what led them out here to eventually discover alien life even though it is hostile. The trailer ends with the title of the film shown once again, followed by the actors, distributing companies and then finally the date of the release which was June 8th.
