Movie trailer analysis-Battleship

The universal logo then comes into the shot next to show the audience just how well made the film was, Of course the studios are famous for making big budget productions which make back money many times over especially the case with Jurassic world which ended up being the 3rd highest grossing film of all time not just in North America but in the world. It was also the mastermind behind fast and furious 7, Jaws, King Kong, back to the future and the first two Jurassic park films. This sort of credibility is essential to a films success as the company has built up a fan base over many many years of making quality films.

The first shot of within the trailer is that of the actual setting, the establishing shot used shows us the ocean which the film will be based in, it then pans upwards to show the fleet of battleships which of course is a reference to the film's title. The shot is effective because it gives the audience an idea of how big the battleships truly are compared to normal people. We then get another establishing shot this time of Honolulu where the built up city is reminiscent of many American cities with the high flying apartments, however what's significant about Hawaii is the mountain ranges and beautiful beaches.

We then add both the battleship element of fire-power and strength to the relaxing element of their surroundings with a shot of a lady relaxing on a surfboard. We then get a shot of two of the main characters lying on a beach talking about proposals and other stuff in the stars over their heads and lights all around them, this is typical of young couples looking to pass onto the next stage of their lives maybe a bit too quickly.

We are then introduced to Liam Neeson and his character who looks like they hold lots of power most probably the captain of the ship, shouting at the character we were just introduced to before on the beach showing that he is indeed a higher rank.We see shots of typical armed forces such as shaving hair and more pictures of boats.

We hear the captain utter about how the main protagonist is the quickest rising star in the US navy but yet he wastes it all, this is shown with him being late to what looks like a very important and formal meeting where every other soldier is standing in a line awaiting orders whereas he is trying to find his place in the line.

We get a shot reverse shot between the main protagonist and his girlfriend from ship to shore and back again to show some more chemistry between them, the look on her face gives us the feeling that she is fed up of something, this something the audience presumes to be the main character asking for permission from the captain to marry his daughter.

We hear him say "naval exercises" which gives us the impression that it is all just fun and games however at the same time we see lots of different countries flags including Japan, this may cause some sort of rivalry between the ship crews as they are training together why trying to outshine one another

We get an overlaying message come up over the shot of the moving battleships to inform the people in the audience where they are, what they are doing and how long they have been there for, this helps to make sure that the audience understands what is going on as well a not assuming anything bad will happen.

We see a panning shot from the deck of one of the ships almost like a POV shot from a crew member turning his head to get a sight of what looks like a piece of land sticking up out of the water. This seems to mobilize the crew into action as no one can seem to place what it is or how it got there not even on an electromagnetic scope/

They see they need a team to investigate it and so pick the main protagonist to sort out the situation therefore giving him an opportunity to right all of his wrongs and sort things out therefore becoming the naval officer he was supposed to be.We get an action shot of a moving dinghy but to remind us that this is indeed a horror movie they put a massive gun on it with none other than Rihanna at the wheel, The establishment of a new character is significant because many people would like to see here in an acting role and know this movie offers them this chance.

We see our main character hit land and nothing happens but as he travels further and further you can tell something is up, The long shot through the eyes of the man marking the binoculars is effective because it makes us feel like we are actually watching him do this.

Once the character touches the ship we can see visually the pain he is going through as he is flung back into the water, we hear a clear directive being "get out of the water", this seems rather hard to do as they are far from their ship. The launching of the forcefield is something very unexpected as it is very abnormal to do, the fact that this enemy craft has trapped some battleships inside of it may seem naive but if it is that confident in taking them out then we think it must be very powerful. The sound is very effective as this humming like sound which doesn't seem man made, the very long shot of the forcefield is effective because you can clearly see an island in the middle, we know from earlier in the trailer that the ships are on training exercises and so aren't there to protect the island.

We then see a massive movement of water when the alien ship comes out of the water, the water shielding the sight mostly form our vision, when it splashes down we get an idea of how large it is as it dwarfs the dinghy by quite a considerable amount. The action shot of the underneath of the ship is only there to showcase how superior their tech is compared to ours. The close up of the captains face shows to us that he is a main character, this is followed by a close up of the main protagonist leading us to believe that these people have chemistry through whatever reason. We are then treated to a birds eye view of a three way stand off eith the dinghy in the middle and a three on three battle the other side, the birds eye view makes us think of the game battleship because of the almost board game like setting.

We then get lots of shots gradually getting quicker and quicker showing many different types of weapons with people running away and everyone looking like they are in the mood for a battle, the last shot we get is off the main battleship as it prepares for what looks like a final battle where they fire all cannons in an eastwards direction hoping to destroy the target, this is followed by the name of the film so people don't forget the name or year it is coming out.
